Massive sulphide discovery in the Ungava Trough

On November 11, 2002, Canadian Royalties announced the discovery of a massive-sulfide zone rich in nickel, copper and platinum group metals near the mining infrastructures of the Raglan mine in the Ungava Trough.

A run of designated claims totalling 8,000 titles, allocated among 21 companies and covering an area of over 2,960 km², was noted after this announcement (map 1). At the end of November 2002, a second rush of claims was observed along the Hudson Bay coast in Nord-du-Québec. This designation totals over 1,300 claims. These two rushes represent revenues of over $700,000 for the government.

By way of comparison, the diamond-claim rush in the region of the Monts Otish between December 2001 and February 2002 totalled over 45,000 claims.
