In the architectural
stone industry, the stone types quarried are classified into three
categories:
- granite;
- marble;
- other stones.
The term "granite" includes
all "hard" crystalline rocks, either igneous or metamorphic,
used in construction and decoration. This is different from the
petrological definition of granite, which corresponds to an intrusive
rock with a composition of 20 to 60% quartz and a proportion of
10 to 65% plagioclase feldspar out of the rock's total (plagioclase
and potassium) feldspar content.
Marble designates a white or coloured
rock (green, yellow, orange, red, brown) containing calcite or dolomite,
which can be polished.
Other stones include limestone,
sandstone, conglomerate, slate, quartzite, and steatite.
