A Responsibility to Entrust

Following the British North America Act, new changes were made in the surveying sector as each province became responsible for land surveys. In Québec, several departments, services or branches exchanged this responsibility over the years.

1869

Under the provincial government, the Département des terres de la couronne and the position of surveyor general, which were under the responsibility of the Commissioner of Crown Lands, continued to exist.

1897

Creation of the Département des terres, des forêts et des pêcheries, and of the Département de la Colonisation et des Mines, to which was attached the Département d'arpentage.

1901

Reintegration of land surveying into the department responsible for managing lands.

1995

The Service de la concession des terres was abolished, and the responsibility for the land register of public lands, the "terrier" was transferred to the Service de l'arpentage.

1998

The Service de l'arpentage became a branch of the Direction de l'information foncière sur le territoire public (DIFTP).

2002

The Direction de l'information foncière sur le territoire public became the Bureau de l'Arpenteur général du Québec.
