Québec a Leader in Hydro-Electricity

Print Version (PDF Format, 204 Kb)

Québec, already known as a world leader in the field of hydro-electricity, is entering a new phase in the development of its hydro-electric potential. Thanks to Québec’s 2006-2015 Energy Strategy, the way is now clear to resume the development of a major hydro-electricity asset.

Major projects

Between now and 2020, Québec will develop its hydraulic generating resources at a pace equivalent to that of the second Baie-James phase, to which it owes its reputation. The Québec Government will launch a number of major hydro-electricity generating projects with a total production potential of 4,500 MW. These are important initiatives that will guarantee Québec’s energy security and provide sufficient flexibility to attract new wealth-creating industries and consolidate its place on export markets.

Two new generating stations have recently been brought into service:

  • Eastmain-1 (480 MW);
  • Péribonka (385 MW).

Two others are currently under construction:

  • Eastmain-1-A-Sarcelle-Rupert (918 MW);
  • Chute-Allard/Rapide-des-Cours (139 MW).

A number of projects with a total potential of 4,500 MW are under consideration, including the La Romaine complex, which will have an installed power of 1,550 MW and will require an investment estimated at $6.5 billion. Overall, production of the projects currently being considered will cost approximately $25 billion and will create 70,000 jobs.

A major economic boost

Hydro-electric development is extremely important for Québec’s economy. Thousands of workers and dozens of local communities will profit directly from these huge undertakings. Québec as a whole will be stronger as a result of these projects, which will benefit workers, their families and their communities.

Hydro-electricity is a plentiful and renewable resource. Québec has undertaken to develop it in strict compliance with the principles of sustainable development, and with due respect for the communities affected by it. In addition, hydro-electricity generating projects are subject to rigorous and systematic environmental impact assessment procedures.

Hydro-electricity: A vision for the future, equal to Québec’s potential.
